TEACHING SYSTEM

In TÖMER, lessons are held in classes of 7-15 learners under the supervision of an expert teaching staff. The “U-type” seating plan in every classroom is a system that is preferred in modern language teaching centres as it enables learners to see each other and the teacher comfortably and communicate easily. In this system, physical distance of the teacher to each class member is the same; it has been observed that, contrary to traditional class environments, this system makes it possible for learners to adapt to the lesson environment more easily, thereby ensuring higher performance.

Language teaching in TÖMER rests on developing four basic language skills (reading, listening, speaking, writing) equally. Language teaching is supported by such audiovisual tools as the tape player, television and DVD player in each classroom.

All the language teachers at TÖMER are graduates of linguistics, language, or language teaching departments of various universities. Some of these teachers have attended or currently attend graduate programmes of different universities, Ankara University being the most preferred one.

TÖMER is not an ordinary “language course” but a scientific research and application centre that serves anyone wishing to learn foreign languages with Ankara University guarantee.

TÖMER teaches the Turkish language to foreigners and foreign languages to Turkish citizens; in addition, there are general-purpose foreign language courses organized for primary education students.

Learners who attend and successfully complete elementary and intermediate levels at TÖMER receive a certificate approved by TÖMER Directorate. Upon complete of the advanced level, on the other hand, a diploma approved by Ankara University Rectorship is granted. Many public and private sector institutions recognize TÖMER certificate and diploma as a proof of candidates’ language level when considering to fill their vacant posts.

Since 1984, TÖMER has taught Turkish and many other languages to hundreds of thousands of people with the purpose of developing basic language skills.

Institutional statistics indicate that learners attending courses at TÖMER display a great level of success at YÖS (Test for Foreign Students) and ÖSS (Student Selection Test for Universities). Considering the fact that there is a growing demand for quality language teaching in Turkey, language teaching task that TÖMER fulfils makes great contribution to the university system by encouraging people to enter language and language-related departments at universities.

In addition to general purpose language courses, TÖMER organizes Specific Purpose Foreign Language Courses and Specific Purpose Turkish Language Courses.
