THE HITIT TURKISH TEACHING SET FOR FOREIGNERS
The Hitit Turkish Teaching Set for Foreigners produced by Ankara University TÖMER Turkish and Foreign Languages Research and Application Centre is currently used by many individuals, institutions and organizations throughout the world. The set was prepared to aid learners learning Turkish in Turkey or abroad; it covers language teaching material that gives four basic language skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) equally.
The HITIT Turkish Teaching Set consists of 4 sections:
1. Coursebooks: Coursebooks include: 3 main class books (Hitit 1, 2, 3), each of which features 16 units. Hitit 1 is for elementary level 1, 2 and 3; Hitit 2 is for intermediate level 1, 2 and 3; Hitit 3 is for advanced level 1, 2 and 3.
2. Workbooks: There are 3 workbooks, each of which corresponds to each of Hitit coursebooks; these workbooks include supplementary material and classroom material for each Hitit unit.
3. Listening material: There are 6 tapes with listening activities and exercises for different levels.
4. Glossaries: Turkish-English or Turkish-German glossaries are available.
Each unit consists of related texts, dialogues, grammar structures and listening activities presented in a coherent fashion.
During design stages, various coursebooks for foreign languages currently used at TÖMER were analysed. Points that needed to be taken special care of in terms of the teaching of Turkish as a foreign languages were highlighted and features of Turkish culture and traditional motifs were integrated into this framework. Texts and dialogues are typical examples of Turkish culture and lifestyle. Especially the coursebook and the workbook designed for advanced levels are rich in everyday conversations and reading texts, and material that will lead the learner into rot learning has been avoided.
It is our sincere hope that the HITIT Turkish Teaching Set will meet demands in the teaching of Turkish as a foreign language. This set was designed because of the fact that there was not a single source complete enough to teach Turkish through; available sources were found to be outdated and simple. TÖMER has always given priority to quality and world standards in language teaching and is known for renewing its language teaching policies in accordance with universal criteria. The HITIT Turkish Teaching Set is the product of TÖMER’s achievements as a scientific research and application centre.
The set has been designed so that the learner can learn Turkish on his or her won with the aid of a dictionary and a grammar book. All grammar structures, divided into relevant language levels, are presented with explanatory examples; what is learned is consolidated through texts and dialogues. Listening material supplement written material so that learners’ pronunciation can be improved. Therefore, it is possible for any learner to develop their language, learn where and how to use grammar structures, as well as any other material they might need in the process of learning Turkish.
