INFORMATION ABOUT ILGAZ |

|
LOCATION The Ilgaz Mountains form an uninterrupted and high mountain range in the western section of the Black Sea region. The Gök Irmak and Araç Çayı to the north and the Devrez Çayı to the south set its limits. Ilgaz Mountain features natural beauties that its abundant forest cover provides. Situated 25 kilometers outside Ilgaz town center, Ilgaz Mountain is 200 kilometers away from Ankara – via Ankara-Çankırı-Kastamonu route and 45 kilometers from Kastamoun.
CLIMATE Despite the fact continental climate is the dominant feature of the region, climatic traces of the Black Sea can also be felt on the mountains HISTORY The town of Ilgaz, named after the mountain range, was known as Climata in antiquity; the name came to be known as Kimistene later on. Long after Turks settled in Anatolia, during the Ottoman Empire rule, the town was renamed as Koçhisar-ı Bala. The name Ilgaz appears in the Ottoman annals after 1854. A subdistrict of Çankırı in the second half of the 19th century, the town became a part of Kastamonu in later dates. The town was officially named Ilgaz in 1922 and became a subdistrict of Çankırı in 1929.
